Indonesia is a vast and beautifully diverse country consisting of more than 17,000 islands, of which only about 6,000 are inhabited, stretching more than 5,000 km between Australia and Asia continental main island and dividing the Pacific and Indian Oceans on the Equator. The largest populated islands are Java, Sumatra, Borneo thru Kalimantan, which occupies the southern two-thirds of the island, Irian Jaya which is western half of New Guinea and Sulawesi. This lovely country, world's largest archipelago, offers the blend of scenic beauty, flora and fauna, culture and marine parks.

The main and the most developed island of Java is where the capital city, Jakarta is located. Jakarta is the busiest town in Indonesia and it is also the commercial centre of this country. Java is the most popular travel destination in Indonesia and exhibits all the characteristic of an Asian society experiencing rapid transition that include great wealth and equal squalor, beautiful open country and filthy cities, tranquil rural scenery and streets choked with traffic. Despite its rapid modernization, Java is an island of stunning natural beauty and almost fifty percent of Indonesia's population live here.

 

The Hindu-Buddhist empires reached their peak in Central Java, producing architectural wonders such as the  Prambanan Temple and Borobudur Temple. The Javanese possess a rich and unique cultural heritage as found in the          Monas in Jakarta

arts centre of Yogyakarta which offers a window to traditional arts and culture of Indonesia and this city is known as the soul of Java. It is possible for tourists to experience the unique traditional Ramayana theatre here at Yogyakarta.
East Java is well known as the location of Mount Bromo, the desolate volcanic mass offering the most spectacular sunrise in Southeast Asia. Volcanic craters, deserted beaches, wildlife reserves, well-preserved temple complexes and a friendly colorful people make East Java a key travel destination for soft adventure. Other Javanese towns of interest include Bandung, the capital city of West Java which is known for its cool mountain climate, Bogor, well known for its botanical garden which was established by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, Surabaya, Solo and Malang. Just off East Java are the popular island resorts of Bali and Lombok. It is possible to experience Balinese dance and theatre and visit the Museum of Painting in Ubud, Bali.

 

The islands to the east of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara provide an adventurous journey to its uncrowded beaches and tranquil countryside, dominated by the spectacular volcano of Mount Rinjani. Komodo island is the home of the famous lizard, the Komodo Dragon and Flores is renowned for its incredible beauty and challenging dives. Sumba is the home to many intricate ikat textiles and the stunning coral reefs of Sulawesi, particularly around Manado, are legendary.

The island of Sumatra, the world's fifth largest, has a wealth of natural resources and wildlife and featured vast rainforest, massive rivers, orang utans, beautiful Lake Toba and commercial centres of Bukit Tinggi and Medan. Kalimantan is the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo and its transected by wide rivers and forests for plantations. It has tremendous outspreads of jungle, rainforest, rivers and wilderness.
